Hydrangea 'Wim's Red' - The Chameleon of the Garden
Hydrangea 'Wim's Red' is one of the most beloved and decorative ornamental shrubs in Estonian gardens, celebrated for its extraordinary colour-changing effect. From the first creamy-white blooms of early summer to the deep wine-red of autumn, this shrub puts on a show that lasts for months. Its fragrant flower heads attract pollinators, while the striking purple-red young stems create a beautiful contrast against the dark green foliage all season long.
Colour Journey
- Flowering begins very early (July, sometimes from late May/June)
- Large cone-shaped flower heads open creamy white
- Gradually turn pink through summer
- Deepen to rich wine or purple-red by autumn
Key Features
- Fragrant flower heads - attracts pollinators
- Striking purple-red young stems and branches - beautiful contrast with dark green leaves
- Strong upright branches - bush does not droop in rain or wind
- Frost hardy - excellent for Estonian conditions
- No winter protection needed for mature plants
Growing Conditions
- Position: Sunny to partially shaded - in full shade flower heads are smaller and colour change less intense
- Soil: Fertile, moderately moist, well-drained, humus-rich, slightly acidic
- Height and width: approx. 1.5-2 m
- Pot size: P9
Care Tips
- Pruning: Hard prune in early spring (March/April), cutting back approx. 2/3 of previous year's growth (or leave approx. 30 cm from ground). This encourages strong new shoots and significantly larger flower heads.
