Hydrangea 'Magical Kilimanjaro' – Elegant Giant with Exceptional Frost Hardiness

Hydrangea 'Magical Kilimanjaro' is an exceptionally elegant panicle hydrangea with strong red-tinged stems and massive, dense, cone-shaped flower heads that can grow up to 30–40 cm long. Its extraordinary frost hardiness — down to −30 to −34°C — makes it one of the most reliable choices for Estonian gardens.

Colour Journey

  • Flower heads open in fresh lime green
  • Turn pure snow white at full bloom
  • Take on a soft creamy or delicate pink hue as autumn arrives

Key Features

  • Massive dense cone-shaped flower heads up to 30–40 cm long
  • Very strong reddish stems — bush does not droop even with large flower heads or in heavy rain
  • Exceptional frost hardiness: −30 to −34°C
  • Flowering: July to September/October
  • Unlike large-leaf hydrangeas, flower colour does not change with soil pH

Growing Conditions

  • Position: Sunny to lightly partially shaded — more sun means larger flower heads
  • Soil: Fertile, humus-rich, moderately moist, well-drained; prefers slightly acidic to neutral
  • Height and width: approx. 1.2–1.5 m
  • Pot size: P9!

Care Tips

  • Watering: Hydrangeas love water. During dry periods, water regularly and thoroughly — less frequently but more generously. Direct water to the root zone, avoiding leaves and flowers.
  • Pruning: As 'Magical Kilimanjaro' blooms on the current year’s shoots, prune in early spring before buds break. Cut back previous year’s growth by 1/3 to 1/2 (leaving 2–3 buds), encouraging strong new branches and giant flower heads.
