About the Plant
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Jip Blue' is a compact and dense large-leaved hydrangea that stands out for its intense, vivid blue spherical flower heads. A low-growing variety with strong stems, it is equally at home in a garden border or as a container plant on a terrace.
Flowers
- Rich, intense blue mophead flower clusters
- Flowers June–October
- Flower colour depends on soil pH: blue in acidic soil (pH below 5.5–6.0), pink/lilac in neutral or alkaline soil
Growth Habit
- Compact and dense
- Height: 35–45 cm in a pot, up to 1 m in the garden
- Strong, sturdy stems
Care Instructions
- Light: Part shade to shade; avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the blooms
- Soil: Rich, moist, and well-draining
- Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry summer days
- Pruning: Light maintenance pruning in spring only – remove spent flower heads and old or damaged stems. Flowers on previous year’s growth, so hard pruning will reduce flowering.
- Keeping flowers blue: Use acidic compost (e.g. rhododendron mix) and water with a hydrangea bluing agent (aluminium sulphate)
Winter Care in Estonia
⚠️ Large-leaved hydrangeas are frost-sensitive. In the garden, provide thorough winter protection. In a pot, move to a cool but frost-free location (cellar or garage) for winter.
