Hydrangea 'Fraise Melba' – Dramatic Colour-Changing Garden Hydrangea

Hydrangea 'Fraise Melba' is one of the most spectacular and admired hydrangea varieties. An evolution of the famous 'Vanille Fraise', it offers even stronger stems and a more intense autumn red. Its giant cone-shaped flower heads put on a dramatic colour show from July through October.

Colour Journey

• July–August: Pure crisp white or ivory
• Mid-August: Lower part of flower heads turns raspberry-red, creating a beautiful two-tone contrast
• Autumn: Whole flower head deepens to rich strawberry to purple-red

Key Features

• Giant cone-shaped flower heads
• Very strong dark-red stems — no drooping even with large flower heads
• Upright habit: height approx. 170–200 cm, width approx. 150 cm
• Frost hardy to −29°C — ideal for Estonian conditions
• Flowering: July–October

Growing Conditions

• Position: Sunny to partially shaded — more sun = more intense autumn colour
• Soil: Fertile, moderately moist, slightly acidic
• Pot size: P9

Care Tips

• Pruning: Hard prune in early spring (March–April), leaving 2–3 buds per shoot, to encourage large flower heads on strong new growth
